Clothing FAQs

Q  What is the best type of clothing for my portrait session?

A  Clothing is one of the most important elements to a "Wow" portrait session.  Solid dark colors are typically best for portraits.  Remember, you want the attention drawn to you in the portrait, not what you are wearing.  A simple dark turtleneck makes a wonderful, elegant portrait.  Never wear clothes with big logos, or distracting patterns.  Also, wear long sleeves and pants.  You might want to wear shorts for an outdoor beach scene, but shorts are almost never a good choice for studio portraits.  Again, it's really hard to beat a black turtleneck :)

Senior FAQ

Q  Can I pick my own poses & backgrounds?
A  Absolutely! We will show you samples of many different combinations so you can show us what you like.
Q  How long will it take?
A  That depends on several factors. For instance, do you want indoor and outdoor? Do you want to shoot at another location? Do you want shots with every stitch of clothing you own? It could be ½ hr. to 2 ½ hrs., but sessions generally last around 1 hour.
Q  What if it rains?
A  Please come in for the indoor session. It’s easier to reschedule outdoor sessions, and we can complete them as soon as the weather clears. Believe it or not, cloudy days are actually desired for most outdoor photography.
Q  What about zits?
A  No problem! Every portrait, every 5x7, 8x10, & every wallet you order, will have blemish removal done, unless you request otherwise.
Q  Can I bring a friend?
A  Sure! We’ll even take a couple of shots of the two of you together. Or, better yet, the two of you schedule your appointments together, & you each get a 5x7 of the two of you FREE!
Q  Can I bring my own props?
A  Please do! Part of what makes senior photography so special is that it captures who you are at this point and time in your life!
A few props you might bring: cars, motorcycles, varsity jackets, uniforms (sports & band), musical instruments, pets, bikes, buddies, sunglasses, hats, hobbies, posters, collections, activities, stuff, anything else that helps define who you are. Bring your imagination & anything else you can fit in your car, & go for something special.
Q  How long will it take to receive my proofs?
A  Proofs generally take about 1-2 weeks.
Q  How do you get printed proofs back so quickly?
A  Some photographers deliver printed proofs quickly because they take their film to a drug or discount store. However, we prefer to maintain the highest quality possible; therefore, we use only professional out-of-state portrait photography labs.

Q  What type of makeup should I wear?

A  Your normal makeup should be fine, except for "glittery" makeup.  Glitter does not photograph well.  Translucent powder is good for males and females alike as it helps cover blemishes and provide a soft look to your face.  Girls may want to bring your own; guys, we will have it at the studio for you.

Wedding FAQ

Q. Do you offer parent albums?
A. Yes, parent albums are available at discounted prices.
Q  Your prices are lower than some of the other photographers I’ve considered, why?
A  Our mission is to provide beautiful portraits at reasonable prices. Whether shooting a youth baseball league or a wedding, we want our customers to feel like their portraits are worth more than they paid for them.
Q  What kind of equipment do you use?
A  We use only top-of-the-line professional camera and lighting equipment for wedding photography. We are one of the first studios in the Tri-state area to go digital! We use Canon professional digital cameras.
Q  What if your equipment fails at our ceremony?
A  We always carry back-up equipment! Our equipment is top-quality and well-maintained, but it is mechanical, and everything mechanical will fail at some point. Therefore, we have a redundant system – if my camera or lights fail during the ceremony, you probably won’t even know. Note: although extremely rare, equipment failures do occur. Whether you choose me or another photographer, ask if they carry professional backup equipment!
Q  Has your equipment ever failed at a wedding ceremony?
A  No. But I’ll be prepared if it does.
Q  Can we request particular shots or groups that we want photographed?
A  Yes! I will prompt you for standard groups (bride’s family, groom’s family, etc.), but I need your help in knowing how to best provide services that meet your needs. For instance, it’s rare when I start arranging extended families that I don’t have at least one divorced couple. For some, it’s no problem. On the other hand, there are others who don’t even want to be in the same room, let alone in a picture together! The more we can talk about what you want before the ceremony, the better.
Q  When do you require payment?
A  A $500 deposit is required to hold your date. Then, ½ is due 30 days before the ceremony with the remainder being due the day of the ceremony.
Q  How long will it take to get my pictures back?
A  Proofs will be available about four weeks from the date of your ceremony.  Your finished  portrait album will generally  be ready within  two weeks after your order is submitted.
Q  Can you provide references of recent weddings you’ve photographed?
A  Certainly. I would not book a wedding photographer without talking with references. Anybody can spread out some impressive photographs; I would want to talk with somebody who worked with the photographer through the whole process.
Q  Will you travel to photograph my wedding?
A  My general travel radius is 45 miles from Grayson, KY.  However, for a reasonable travel fee (50cents per mile), I frequently travel to Lexington, Louisville, Columbus, etc.

Q  I would like to save some money by scanning my pictures and producing my own enlargements, do you have a problem with that?
A  Yes! All photographs are copyrighted materials. I could cut corners and have my reprints done at a drug or discount store and save all kinds of money. Then again, they would look like they came from a drug or discount store… You get the point – I want to deliver beautiful portraits, not “pictures.”
Q  Do you have a tax ID?
A  Our KY tax ID number is 221383
Q  Do you have business insurance?
A  Yes!  Metcalf Photography is fully insured.
